A Circus of Orchids

Each year I meet an old friend to go to the orchid show at the Chicago Botanic Garden. We wander the lush landscapes and have a nice hike before finding lunch. Is there a better way to spend a Sunday in March?

This year the orchid show was circus themed. The Garden recently overhauled their greenhouse mechanics, so it had been several months since I’ve visited their cactus and tropical collections. The show immediately impressed with a fabulous purple big top tent. From there we wandered the halls and drank in thousands of orchids with accompanying tropical plants. It’s very well done, and a treat for anyone who loves flowers.

There was also a small orchid sale, and what do good gardeners do, but take one home? I am able to give my mother-in-law orchids as she has a small greenhouse where they thrive. As with all my houseplants in my study, you need to be a tough critter to make it. So, I give mom-in-law orchids and stick to African violets, amaryllis, and holiday cactus.
